Many might assume that the tavern’s name, Athena, derives from the goddess, or the capital with which Greece’s history is so deeply intertwined. However, the true story operates on a more intimate scale, much like everything else in Kastellorizo.
Athena was the beloved daughter of the tavern’s first owner, Vangelis. His affection for her led him to name the business after her, a place he held dearly in his heart. Today, we find it at the port, standing in the same welcoming spot for newcomers to the island.
At noon, a table draped in white awaits you indoors, in the most special of spots. Or perhaps by the sea, where turtles silently glide just beyond your feet. But remember, despite their proximity, do not feed these gentle sea creatures!
Athena’s is a haven for meze aficionados. While not widely broadcasted, their unique pumpkin meatballs alone are worth the visit. Here, beloved salads, shrimps, and other appetizers are ready for a delightful rediscovery. And if a plate of shrimp or lobster pasta whets your appetite, this is the place to indulge.
In the evening, find people gathered by the luminous tables, the earlier encounter with the sun evident on their glowing faces. Attired in their finest, their hair still holds the damp touch of the sea. They sit before a parade of those choosing to savor a post-meal drink.
At Athena’s, pour wine, enjoy companionship, and soak in the warmth until you sense a gentle call to venture into the island’s embrace later on.
